PART ONE

Introduction

Are you tired of the 9-to-5 routine, stuck in an office or city that doesn’t inspire you? Trust me, there’s another way of living. What if I told you, as I’m writing this, I’m sipping an espresso on a brisk winter morning in San Miguel de Allende — a lovely colonial pueblo in Central Mexico. I’m doing it, and you can do it too.

If you want to join the digital nomad revolution, the first thing you’ll need is a remote job that allows you to work from anywhere. All you really need is an internet connection, a laptop, and an inquisitive mind. In this guide, we’re going to cover some of the most common digital nomad jobs.

Since the 2020 global pandemic, full-time and part-time remote work has become more popular than ever. Today, thousands of digital nomads like me are working from coffee shops, co-working spaces, beaches, mountaintops — wherever they can find Wi-Fi! They’re completely location-independent. They get to expand their horizons, taking in new cultures, trying exotic foods, meeting people they never would have met stuck in the office — and the best part is, they're making money while doing it.

It should be noted, your remote gig might not be listed in this article. These strategies are just a few common ones we’ve come across. Part of the fun of being a nomad is finding your own niche that works for you. If you’re hardworking and creative, you can make money in ways you would never have imagined. Now that the internet has become an integral part of our daily lives, the world has never been more connected. Every day, billions of people log on, all with the potential of being future customers, employers, or even followers. Of course this depends on what career you choose, and what’s right for you.

At Nomad Insurance, we’ve been digital nomads for over a decade. We made this list from our personal experience, but there are many hustles out there to explore beyond what you can find in this article.

Tips for Landing A Gig

Here are some top tips to help you in your digital nomad job search:

Utilize Job Boards & Freelance Sites

Start by checking out job boards specifically for remote jobs, such as Remote.co and FlexJobs. These sites are dedicated to connecting employers with remote workers. They often feature a variety of job opportunities from different industries. Since many companies have made jobs remote since the Covid-19 outbreak, major jobs sites like Indeed.com have made it possible to search for jobs by exclusively filtering “remote” locations.

You can also consider freelance sites such as Upwork and Fiverr, where you can bid on short-term projects and gain experience working with clients from all over the world.

Network, Network, Network

Networking is key when it comes to finding remote work. Be sure to join digital nomad groups on Facebook, attend travel conferences, and connect with like-minded individuals on LinkedIn or Reddit. The more connections you make in the digital nomad community, the more opportunities will come your way.

Showcase Your Skills

Create a professional online portfolio to showcase your skills and experience. Highlight your past projects, achievements, and what makes you stand out from the crowd. This will not only make you more attractive to potential employers, but it will also give you a platform to show off your abilities and attract new clients.

Embrace a Remote Mindset

Remote work requires a different set of skills and qualities than working in a traditional office environment. To be successful as a digital nomad, you need to embrace a remote mindset and be self-motivated, organized, and have strong communication skills, while potentially operating in a different time zone than your employer. Demonstrate these skills in your cover letter and resume to make a strong impression on potential employers.

Be Open to Different Industries & Roles

Don’t limit yourself to a specific industry or role when searching for remote jobs. Be open to different opportunities and be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. You never know what amazing opportunities may come your way.

Boost Your Skillset

Boost your chances of landing your dream remote job by honing your skills with online courses and certifications from websites like Udemy and Coursera. For example, a certification in software development, web design, affiliate marketing, Excel, or project management can make you stand out in a crowded job market.

Remote Job Boards

Here are a couple websites that have extensive lists of remote job boards, so you can get started on your search for a remote job.

And here’s a great article on using social media to find a remote job board:

FIRE Movement

F.I.R.E. stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. In the FIRE movement, the goal is to save almost all your income—living on the bare minimum that you need to survive. Also, you invest aggressively: between 50% and 75% of your income. Then, you retire early, in a developing nation with a lower cost of living and lower withdrawal rates, and spend the rest of your days sipping mai tais on a tropical beach, retired at the age of 35.

Content Creators

If you're a talented copywriter, blogger, podcaster, photographer, videographer, or graphic designer, you can turn your skillset into a lucrative career as a content creator. You can work for magazines, blogs, startups, or even as a freelancer, creating and publishing engaging content for the world to see. The average salary for content creators is $44,192 USD per year.

Build A Twitter Audience or Build A Newsletter

Building an audience on Twitter or a newsletter can be a slow grind but can reap large rewards. There are many success stories of people either creating highly profitable lead funnels for specific niches, or monetizing and selling their newsletters.

For example, when The Hustle or Milk Road grew large audiences, they were sold or acquired for huge sums of money: https://thehustle.co/%F0%9F%94%A5-boom-the-hustle-is-getting-acquired/ https://milkroad.com/news/big-news We recommend this article for more information:

Build an Audience in a Niche Market

Building an audience in a niche market generally produces income through clicks, sales, affiliate marketing, or selling your brand. You can make Instagram or TikTok videos like Chef Schwarz or become a travel vlogger. One of our employee’s parents is a pilot and he flies to uninhabited locations and cooks wilderness meals there. Whatever your niche is, let it work for you.

YouTube Channel

— Travel Vlogger —

If your goal is to travel the world as a nomad, you might as well document your journey and take a stab at making a YouTube channel. Here are some of our favorite channels that have grown into behemoths over the years. Pro Tip: go back to their first videos and watch their journey from the beginning.

  • Lost LeBlanc
  • Kara and Nate
  • Sailing La Vagabonde

— Any Other YouTube Channel —

It doesn’t have to be a travel channel to make a living on YouTube. You can literally make a living doing anything if you have a following. And if your laptop or cellphone has a camera, then you can make a video. And if you have something to say, people will listen.

Affiliate Marketing

When you are a creator, one of the most common ways to monetize a channel is to use affiliate links. These are links on your website that link to another website. Companies will generally pay you each time someone clicks on your external link; or if that click leads to a sale, they’ll pay you a percentage of that sale. It’s easy, passive income.

  • Amazon Affiliate Links

  • Travel Vlog Affiliate Strategies

  • Insurance Affiliates Like Expat Insurance

No Experience? No Problem! Here are some full-time, remote jobs for beginners with no experience and a taste for adventure:

  • Social Media Manager

  • Customer Support Representative

  • Online Tutor

  • Data Entry Clerk

We did all the research for you, all you need to do is take that leap.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is when you become affiliated with a company, and you help sell their product or services. For example, if you become an insurance affiliate, then you would help generate leads — and get a percentage of any sale that’s made. There are many ways to generate leads, but, basically it involves building a community of followers and using your platform to market for a company.

Airbnb Host, Manager, or Owner

We have seen many nomads abroad make a living renting apartments or houses, refitting them for short-term stays, and posting them on Airbnb. If you have capital to spare, you can also purchase the residences. Note that this is not as profitable as it once was, and can be considered unethical due to gentrification of certain markets. As the real estate market can be quite inefficient, there are many arbitrages (profits from inequalities in pricing for the same or similar asset) to be made and should be considered.

Amazon FBA, ECommerce, or Drop Shipping

This continues to be one of the fastest opportunities for making money online. If you find the right niche and create profitable conversion pathway for customers, then you could make a lot of money. These businesses are also bought and sold quite easily, meaning if you master this skill you could sell your business before your niche becomes too competitive. On the flip side, you could also buy distressed businesses that you feel you could grow with your skillset. Click here to view a good website for checking out some of these business models.

Day Trading and Cryptocurrency Trading

Many expats just make money through trading on their phones or computers. It’s constant work, but it’s fairly easy once you know how to read market charts and other trader information, and it can be done anywhere from an app on your phone. It becomes a habit, like checking your social media or messages.

In short, you buy stocks or cryptocurrency when it’s low, and you sell when it’s high. The goal with day trading is to make a bunch of tiny purchases every day with a highly varied portfolio. You have to monitor it constantly. You could lose lots of money while you’re sleeping if you put all your eggs in one basket. However, it’s really about allowing a bit of money to become a lot of money while you live your dream life abroad.

— Salary —

Teaching English is one of the most personally rewarding jobs, and it’s readily available. The worldwide demand to learn English is great, which is why so many expats and nomads have at one point tried this hustle. Freelance Writer / Copywriter

10 years ago, when I first moved to Mexico with no practical skills, meager savings, and a desire to take the leap abroad, I took advantage of my penchant for writing and began a lucrative freelance copywriting career. Now, I’ve become an SEO expert and have traveled the globe at least four times and grown more than I can possibly convey.

Freelance copywriting is a great way to begin your journey abroad. There’s always a market for people willing to write, though starting wages for writers with no experience are quite poor. Nomad Insurance recommends getting into User Experience Writing (UX). UX writing has a very low word count (so the job is fast) and tech companies often pay better than marketing companies.

The average freelance writer salary in the United States is $78,412 USD per year.

Human Resources

Human Resources (HR) can mean a lot of paperwork, but if you have the qualifications, then you should consider a career working for an HR company. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many companies have gone fully remote — in all departments. For example, you can get a job at a startup if you have a background or a degree in Human Resources. Smaller tech companies are more likely to hire an HR remote worker for this type of position.

Local Jobs

There are many jobs that you can find working abroad. Lots of nomads will travel for a while, and if they find a place they like, they’ll stay there for a bit. They can supplement their income from their remote job with a small, local job — often under the table (shhhhh, don’t tell anyone!). These are some quick examples, but you can find something if you look around:

Make Online Courses

Many people make a great living creating online courses. If you are an expert in anything, chances are you can make decent courses, and with persistence you will create a dependable income. Click here for a fantastic video of a photographer-turned-course-guru at the Digital Nomad Summit in Thailand, 2019.

This type of income is called passive income, and it’s the ideal form of income. You create content, and then it’s there, online, paying you dividends while you sleep, travel, enjoy life — for years to come. The best part is, the more content you create, the more passive income you generate.

One of our friends, Mike Van Orden followed the instructions in this YouTube video. He created online classes to teach comic book illustration — and he’s killing it. You can do it too.

— Salary —

Online courses creator’s salary is $40,000 - $91,000 USD per year.

Travel Vlogger / Influencer

Travel vloggers film their journeys — and the most successful ones gain a huge following. If you have a large following on social media, then you’re considered an “influencer.” Influencers can get paid big bucks for generating engagement on social media platforms. You can do it by doing something unique, generating a polarizing discussion, or just being beautiful. There are many ways to become a social media influencer — and our favorite is the travel blogger or vlogger.

Virtual Assistant

Do you have excellent organizational skills and a keen attention to detail? Then you can become a virtual assistant (VA). This is like a personal assistant, but over the internet. You’d be helping busy professionals manage their day-to-day tasks, such as email and scheduling, data entry, and research.

— Salary —

A virtual assistant has an average salary of $59,024 USD per year.

Virtual Personal Trainer

If you’re a fitness fanatic, then this may be the job for you. You will help people meet their fitness goals, often with dietary consulting, training regiments, live coaching (to ensure they have correct form and are motivated), and, at times, unofficial counseling — helping them through the emotional stresses that come with a body transformation.

If you’re already a personal trainer, you’ve likely realized since the pandemic that this can be done online. I’ve seen a guy do a 30-minute workout session from a corner at the bar. I have a friend who set up a training program in Da Nang, training expats and nomads in the park and coaching the rest of the day, and he made a solid living to travel. You can do this. It’s just as easy as staying in shape.

— Salary —

A virtual personal trainer has an average salary of $52,647 USD per year.

You’ll work long days and spend almost no money, so you’ll leave with loads of disposable income. Many seasonal workers, remote workers, and farm hands become nomads in the off season. Work three months and travel the world the other nine.
